Market rates
"And I'm sure there's at least one more increase in 2006." That's a prediction from our October e-zine which came true at the November meeting of the monetary policy committee. Whether or not we shall see further increases in early 2007 is currently for debate. As a non-economist I think there is a possibility (perhaps even a probability) that rates will rise again in the spring by .25%. Beyond that it will depend very much on the U.S Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank. [more] |

The Plight of a First Time Buyer
I'm neither a historian nor an economist but I've got a good memory and I notice what's going on. My wife and I bought our first house when we were 23 year-old newlyweds in 1971. It was a brand new 3 bed semi in Fulwood, a reasonable suburb of Preston, and cost us £5,450. Mortgage interest rates were six and five eighths (sounds like a school cap size) percent, an all time high in those days, and we were offered a maximum 2.5 times my salary plus 1x my wife's as she was considered (rightly) to be of child bearing age.
